GREATEST GAMES

Over the course of the previous 12 years, the Knights have taken part in some very memorable games.  Come from behind wins, upset wins, and unfortunately there were some great games that the Knights came up on the short end of.  Here is a list of some of the greatest games in Elkins Knights history.  If you do not see a game listed that you feel should be, please email and tell us your pick.

Elkins 3 Bellaire 1
1998 Game 2 of Region III Finals
University of Houston
Recap:  3-1 Elkins lead in the bottom of the 7th inning.  Bellaire has the bases loaded, two outs, and Kyle Smith coming to the plate.  Smith hits a scorching liner to left field where Dan Tuskowski races to the ball and makes an unbelievable diving catch to seal the game and send the Knights to the State Tournament.  Kevin Lawson pitches a complete game seven hitter to hold the Cardinals to the single run.  It was the Knights 21st consecutive victory on the season.

Elkins 6 Brazoswood 5
2003 Region III Semifinal Game
Astrodome
Recap:  The Bucs owned a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the 6th inning before the Knights put four up on the board to cut the lead to one run.  Brazoswood starter Brad Lincoln had held the Elkins bats relatively quiet before giving up 2 runs on a Grant Taylor double before being relieved by Sam Janda.  Janda then gave up another two runs before finally getting out of the 6th inning.  Mike Susaneck came in for starter Kelly Shearer and held the Bucs scoreless to keep the offense within striking distance.  Using a walk, single, walk, hit by pitch and another walk, the Knights scored twice in the 7th to win the game in amazing fashion.

Elkins 5 Round Rock 4
2003 State Championship Game
Dell Diamond
Recap:  Round Rock entered the game in a position not too unfamiliar to Elkins fans.  Sitting atop the national polls, the Dragons seemed to be the odds on favorites to stop Elkins from defending their state championship.  With 1st round draft pick John Danks on the mound, the entire Austin area  was feeling confident about winning state.  Local media outlets covering the state tournament was all Round Rock all the time which of course was taken as disrespectful to the Knights.  All the hype didnt matter though, as Elkins came out swinging and put up a five run lead in the first three innings against the Dragons ace.  A solo homer by Chad Huffman proved to be the final difference, as he planted the pitch onto the left field hill.  Mike Susaneck pitched the game that makes a career in holding the Round Rock offense to 2 earned runs on 9 hits.  Spencer Jackson went 4-4 at the plate to be named championship game MVP.

Elkins 4 Clements 1
2003 District Play
Frankie Field
Recap:  Kelly Shearer pitches through the flu to shut down the Rangers to give Elkins the outright lead in district play.  Shearer who pitches with obvious signs of fatigue and discomfort, goes 6 1/3 innings of 5-hit ball to hold the then 2nd ranked Rangers at bay.  Stephen Porlier closes out the game for Shearer by striking out the final batter with two runners on base.

Elkins 2 Bellaire 1
2000 Region III Area Round
Recap:  32-2 record.  Number 1 in the national polls.  12.5 runs per game.  22 game winning streak.  No, that wasn't Elkins, that was Bellaire.  After cruising through district, dismantling opponents left and right, the Cardinals ran into the sophomore buzz saw that was James Loney.  James held Bellaire to only 5 hits while striking out 10 and made the solo homeruns by Jason Sullivan and Chad Larsen hold up in the victory.
