Sample situations

Base on balls: Write “BB” along the first base line on the diamond. Darken this line.

Single: Write “1B” along the first base line on the diamond. Darken this line.

Double: Write “2B” along the line connecting first and second base on the diamond. Darken this line and the line connecting home and first.

Triple: Write “3B” along the line connecting second base and third base. Darken this line, the line connecting first and second base and the line connecting home and first.

Home run: Write “HR” along the line connecting third base to home plate on the diamond. Shade in the box completely. Mark the RBI box accordingly.

Hit by pitch: Write “HP” or “HBP” along the line connecting home plate and first base on the diamond. Darken this line.

Fielder’s choice: Write “FC” along the line connecting home plate and first base. Darken this line.

Error: Write “E” and the “fielder position #” along the line connecting home plate and first base, and darken the line. For example, if the player reaches first base as a result of an error by the third baseman, you would write “E5”

Catcher’s interference: Write “CI” along the line connecting home plate and first base on the diamond. Darken this line.

Ground rule double: Write “GRD” along the line connecting first base and second base on the diamond. Darken this line, and the line connecting home plate and first base.

Strikeout (swinging): Write a big “K” in the middle of the diamond. Mark the number of total outs in the inning in the circle in the lower right corner.

Strikeout (looking): Write a big, backward “K” in the middle of the diamond. Mark the number of total outs in the inning in the circle in the lower right corner.

Fly out: Write “F” and the “fielder position #” in the middle of the diamond. For example, if a player flies out to centerfield, you would mark it “F8”. Mark the number of total outs in the inning in the circle in the lower right corner.

Foul out: Write “FO” and the “fielder position #” in the middle of the diamond. For example, if a player hits a pop up which is caught by the catcher in foul territory, you would mark it “FO2”. Mark the number of total outs in the inning in the circle in the lower right corner.

Line out: Write “L” and the “fielder position #” in the middle of the diamond. For example, if a player lines out to the second baseman, you would write “L4”. Mark the number of total outs in the inning in the circle in the lower right corner.

Unassisted put out: Write “U” and the “fielder position #” in the middle of the diamond. For example, if the first baseman fields a grounder and tags first before the runner gets there, you would mark it “U3”. Mark the number of total outs in the inning in the circle in the lower right corner.

Ground out: First, write the “fielder position #” of the player who fielded the grounder and is making the throw for the force out. Then write a dash; then the “fielder position #” of the player who is receiving the throw (in most cases, it is the first baseman) in the middle of the diamond. For example, when a player hits a ground ball to the shortstop, and the shortstop fields the ball and throws to first base for the out, you would mark it “6-3”. Mark the number of total outs in the inning in the circle in the lower right corner.

 

Sacrifice fly: Write “SF” and the “fielder position #” of the player who made the catch in the middle of the diamond. For example, if a batter hits a sacrifice fly to the left fielder, you would mark it “SF7”. Mark the number of total outs in the inning in the circle in the lower right corner.

Sacrifice bunt: Write “SH” and the “fielder position # (s)” of the player(s) that made the play in the middle of the diamond. For example, if a batter bunts to the pitcher and the pitcher throws to first base for the out, with the runner successfully advancing to the next base, you would mark it “SH 1-3”. Mark the number of total outs in the inning in the circle in the lower right corner.

 

Stolen base: Write “SB” along the line connecting the base the runner was coming from and the base the runner stole. Darken this line.

Caught Stealing: Write “CS” and the “fielder position #’s” of the players involved in throwing the runner out along the line connecting the base the runner was coming from to the base the runner was trying to steal. Darken the line from the base the runner was coming from to about halfway to the base the runner was trying to steal, and draw a slash at the end of the darkened part, stopping the line. For example, if a runner gets thrown out at second base on a steal by the catcher, and the tag is applied by the shortstop, you would mark it “CS 2-6”. Mark the number of total outs in the inning in the circle in the lower right corner.
